CAN I BE IN THE WORLD AND NOT LOVE IT?

WHAT IS WORLDLINESS AND HOW CAN A YOUNG PERSON DEAL WITH IT?

Examples from Scripture: "For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica." (2 Timothy 4:10)

WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE WORLD THAT MAKES YOUNG PEOPLE FALL FOR OR LOVE IT?

The answer is clear from the Bible in 1 John 2:16 (AMP): "For all that is in the world:

  • • The lust of the flesh [craving for sensual gratification]
  • • The lust of the eyes [greedy longings of the mind]
  • • The pride of life [assurance in one's own resources or in the stability of earthly things]..."

From the scripture above we see that The temptation of young people to stay trendy with all the stuff in vogue can lead them to become materialistic. Finally the unpredictability of the future coupled with a world that celebrates self ambition drives some young people to seek self importance.

HOW CAN A YOUNG PERSON STAY OUT OF THE WORLDLY TRAP?

I have a two point suggestion:

  1. 1. We must think long and hard about the deadly poison of world-love in the light of the scriptures below:

  2. "If any one loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. . . The world passes away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides for ever." (1 John 2:15,17)
"Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God." (James 4:4)
  3. 2. We must ponder or meditate the never-ending delights of the mountain spring of God's approval, Fellowship with Him and the beauty of His Majesty. This is because the spell of sin's fascination is broken by the higher pleasures of the presence of God. Check out these scriptures below:

"Thou hast put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound." (Psalm 4:7)

"Whom have I in heaven but thee and there is nothing on earth that I desire besides thee. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever." (Psalm 73:25-26)
